Guinness

- is a popular Irish dry stout that originated in a brewery at St. James’s Gate, Dublin. A distinctive feature is the burnt flavour which is derived from the use of roasted unmalted barley.

Guinness History 

Arthur Guinness started brewing ales from 1759 at the St. James’s Gate Brewery, Dublin. On 31 December he signed (up to) a 9,000 year lease at £45 per annum for the unused brewery. Ten years later on 19 May 1769 Arthur exported his ale for the first time, when six and a half barrels were shipped to England. Arthur started selling the dark beer porter in 1778. The first Guinness beers to use the term were Single Stout and Double Stout in the 1840s

  1. Guinness is sometimes believed to have invented stout, however the first known use of the word stout in relation to beer appears in a letter in the Egerton Manuscript dated 1677.
  2. Arthur started selling the dark beer porter in 1778. The first beers to use the term were Single Stout and Double Stout in the 1840s
  3. The brewery hired the statistician William Sealy Gosset in 1899, who achieved lasting fame under the pseudonym “Student” for techniques developed for the company, particularly Student’s t-distribution and the even more commonly known Student’s t-test
  4. They has also been referred to as “the black stuff” and as a “Pint of Plain” – referred to in the famous refrain of Flann O’Brien’s poem “The Workman’s Friend”: “A pint of plain is your only man.”
  5. The company acquired the Distillers Company in 1986
  6. They then merged with Grand Metropolitan in 1997 to form Diageo PLC
  7. Guinnes’ famed stout is made from water, barley, hops, and brewer’s yeast, and is treated with isinglass finings made from fishes’ air bladders
  8. Guinness uses the harp of Brian Boru as its trademark. This harp, dating from the 14th or 15th century, which is on view at Trinity College, Dublin, has been a symbol of Ireland since the reign of Henry VIII (16th century)
  9. The Guinness Book of World Records is named after this very company!!

After Walker’s death in 1857 it was his son Alexander Walker and grandson Alexander Walker II who were largely responsible for establishing the Scotch as a popular brand

  1. Alexander Walker first introduced the iconic square bottle in 1870.
  2. The product label is applied at an angle of 24 degrees which means the text on the label could be made larger and more visible
  3. In 1908, when James Stevenson was the Managing Director, there was a re-branding of sorts. The whisky was renamed from Walker’s Kilmarnock Whiskies to Johnnie Walker Whisky.
  4. In 1932, Alexander II added JW Swing to the line, the name originating from the unusual shape of the bottle, which allowed it to rock back and forth.
  5. The company joined Distillers Company in 1925. Distillers was acquired by Guinness in 1986, and Guinness merged with Grand Metropolitan to form Diageo in 1997.
  6. In 2009 the advertising agency Bartle Bogle Hegarty created a new short film, starring Robert Carlyle and called The Man Who Walked Around the World, which outlined the history of the brand.
  7. Diageo has created “The Striding Man Society” which is a members club for JW drinkers

-is a brand of vodka owned and produced by the British company Diageo. Products include vodka, flavored vodka, and malt beverages.

Smirnoff History 

The brand began with a vodka distillery founded in Moscow by Pyotr Arsenievich Smirnov (1831–1898), the son of illiterate Russian peasants, under the trading name of PA Smirnoff who pioneered charcoal filtration in the 1870s. His brand was reportedly the tsar’s favorite. When he died, he was succeeded by his third son Vladimir Smirnov.

  1. In 1904 the Tsar nationalized the Russian vodka industry and Vladimir was forced to sell his factory and brand. During the October Revolution of 1917, the family had to flee
  2. Vladimir Smirnov re-established the factory in 1920 in Constantinople (present day Istanbul). Four years later he moved to Lwów (formerly Poland, now Lviv, Ukraine) and started to sell the vodka under the contemporary French spelling of the name, “Smirnoff”.
  3. In late 1930s, Heublein acquired the North American rights of  the brand
  4. In Kentucky sales rocketed as the distributor started marketing the brand as ‘white whiskey, no taste, no smell’.
  5. In 1982, the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company acquired Heublein Inc. for $1.4 billion dollars. RJR Nabisco sold the division to Grand Metropolitan in 1987.
  6. Grand Metropolitan merged with Guinness to form Diageo in 1997
  7. During the 1990s one of Piotr Smirnov’s descendants, Boris Smirnov, started producing Smirnov (Смирновъ in Ukraine) vodka in Russia, claiming to be “The Only Real Smirnov”. After a number of lawsuits, the company successfully reclaimed its trademark, while in 2006 Diageo concluded a joint venture deal with the Smirnov company
  8. They had the naming rights to the Smirnoff Music Centre, a concert amphitheater in Dallas, Texas from 2000-2008
  9. There are two different products by the name of Ice. One, sold in France and the United States, is a citrus-flavored malt beverage (5.5% ABV) with variants in ‘Original,’ and ‘Triple Black.’ The other, sold in Europe (excluding France), Latin America, Australia and Canada, is a premixed vodka drink
  10. Source, a lightly carbonated beer-alternative, was released in May 2007

GS was founded in New York in 1869 by the German-born Marcus Goldman. In 1882, Goldman’s son-in-law Samuel Sachs joined the firm.In 1885, Goldman took his son Henry and his son-in-law Ludwig Dreyfuss into the business and the firm adopted its present name, Goldman Sachs & Co.

  1. GS Headquarters, at 200 West Street, in Manhattan.
  2. In the early 20th century, Goldman was a player in establishing the initial public offering (IPO) market
  3. On December 4, 1928, it launched the Goldman Sachs Trading Corp. a closed-end fund with characteristics similar to that of a Ponzi scheme. The fund failed as a result of the Stock Market Crash of 1929, hurting the firm’s reputation for several years afterward

In December 2005, four years after its report on the emerging “BRIC” economies (Brazil, Russia, India, and China), Goldman Sachs named its “Next Eleven” list of countries, using macroeconomic stability, political maturity, openness of trade and investment policies and quality of education as criteria: Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Turkey, South Korea and Vietnam.
  14. In April, 2010, Goldman director Rajat Gupta was named in an insider-trading case. It was said Gupta had “tipped off a hedge-fund billionaire,” Raj Rajaratnam of Galleon Group, about the $5 billion Berkshire Hathaway investment in Goldman in September, 2008

But after a well fought battle, Pratheek and Arul from St. Paul’s won the quiz followed by Jeydev and Pranav from FAPS.

Cadbury History

In 1824, John opened a shop on Bull Street in Birmingham, UK to sell tea, coffee and drinking chocolate. The shop run in association with John’s brother was named ‘Cadbury Brothers of Birmingham’. The two brothers opened an office in London and in 1854 received the Royal Warrant as manufacturers of chocolate and cocoa to Queen Victoria.

  1. The first Dairy Milk bar was sold in 1905.
  2. Cadbury merged with drinks company Schweppes to form in 1969 and was known as “Cadbury Schweppes plc” until a May 2008 demerger, in Schweppes was spin off as  Dr Pepper Snapple Group. The merged company went on to acquire Sunkist, Canada Dry, Typhoo Tea
  3. In 1861, John’s son George and Richard took over the company. In 1878, they acquired the Bournbrook estate to develop a new factory. Bournbrook was renamed to Bournville and the Bournville factory opened in 1879.
  4. In 1893, George bought 120 acres (49 ha) of land close to the works and planned, at his own expense, a model village which would ‘alleviate the evils of modern more cramped living conditions’. By 1900 the estate included 313 cottages and houses set on 330 acres (130 ha) of land.
  5. More than 2,000 of the company’s male employees joined the Armed Forces and to support the war effort, the company provided clothing, books and chocolate to soldiers. After the war, the Bournville factory was redeveloped and mass production began in earnest. In 1918, they opened their first overseas factory in Hobart, Tasmania and in 1919 undertook a merger with J. S. Fry & Sons,
  6. During World War II, parts of the Bournville factory were turned over to war work, producing milling machines and seats for fighter aircraft.
  7. In December 2008 it was announced that they were to sell its Australian beverage unit to Asahi Breweries.

The history of KRAFT Foods goes back to 1903, when, with $65 in capital, a rented wagon and a horse named Paddy, J.L. Kraft started  purchasing  cheese  at  Chicago’s  Water  Street wholesale market and  reselling  it  to local merchants.  In 1917  the  company  started supplying cheese in tins to the U.S. Government for the armed forces in World War I.  The success of Kraft led to its acquisition, in 1930, by National Diary Product Corporation, a firm set by Thomas Mclnnerney on December 23, 1910.

  1. In 1928, it acquired Phenix Cheese Company, the maker of a cream cheese branded as Philadelphia cream cheese, and the company changed its name to Kraft-Phenix Cheese Company. In 1969, the firm changed its name from National Dairy to Kraftco Corporation.
  2. In 1980, Kraft merged with Dart Industries to form Dart & Kraft.
  3. At the end of 1988, Philip Morris Companies purchased Kraft for $12.9 billion. In 1989, Kraft merged with Philip Morris’s General Foods unit – makers of Oscar Mayer meats, Maxwell House coffee, Jell-O gelatin, Budget Gourmet frozen dinners, Entenmann’s baked goods, Kool-Aid, Crystal Light and Tang powdered beverage mixes, Post Cereals, Shake ‘n Bake flavored coatings and numerous other packaged foods – as Kraft General Foods.
  4. In 1995, it changed its name to the present name, Kraft Foods. The same year, it sold its bakery division (except Lender’s Bagels, which was sold in 1996 to CPC International), its candy division and its tablespreads division. Log Cabin syrup was sold in 1997
  5. In July 2007, the company bought Groupe Danone’s biscuit (cookie) and cereal division for $7.2 billion, including iconic French biscuit brand Lefèvre-Utile.
  6. In February 2008, Berkshire Hathaway Inc. run by billionaire investor Warren E. Buffett announced that it had acquired an 8% stake in Kraft Foods worth over $4 billion
  7. In 1933, the company started to use radio on an extensive scale. It sponsored the one-hour weekly musical and variety show ‘Kraft Musical Review’, which headlined notable show business personalities. New products such as Miracle Whip salad dressing (1933), Kraft macaroni and cheese dinner (1936), and Parkay margarine (1937) were introduced through the ‘Kraft Music Hall’ and became immediate favorites.
  8. While in his seventies, James Kraft helped create one of the first major television programs, the ‘Kraft Television Theatre’, which was said to have set audience and studio production records. The show ran from 1947 until 1958.

Don Facundo, a Spanish immigrant to Cuba, had discover a technique to purify rum, which was hitherto considered as a cheap drink, using charcoal. In 1862, he along with his brother Jose set up a shop in Santiago de Cuba distillery.

  1. As many of Santiago’s resident couldn’t read, Don’s wife Dona Amalia suggested using a symbol to represent his product.
  2.  The building housing the first distillery had a large number of fruit bats living under the roof of the distillery, which led to a Bat device as the logo of the company  and Don’s product soon became popular as ‘el ron del murcielago’ or ‘the rum of the bat’. Bacardi

Founded in 1942 by Joseph-Armaud as L’Auto-Neige Bombardier Limitée in 1942, at Valcourt in the Eastern Townships, Quebec, Canada. Joseph was a mechanic who dreamed of building a vehicle that could “float on snow.” In 1937, he designed and produced his first snowmobile in his small repair shop in Valcourt, Quebec.

  1. The Ski-doo was originally called the “Ski-Dog” because Bombardier meant it to be a practical vehicle to replace the dogsled for hunters and trappers. By an accident, a painter misinterpreted the name and painted “Ski-Doo” on the first prototype.
  2. On February 18, 1964, J. Armand died of cancer at age 56. At the time of death, he was at the helm of company controlling every aspects of it, right from the design. In 1967, the company was renamed Bombardier Limited
  3. In 1970, the company acquired the Viennese company Lohner-Rotax, a manufacturer of snowmobile engines and tramways, and became involved with rail business
  4. In 1974, it won its first mass transit contract to manufacture 423 cars for the city of Montréal’s subway system.
  5. I n 2000, they acquired Skyjet.com, a pioneer in real-time online air charter reservations.
  6. The earlier logo depicted a sprocket– profiled wheel with teeth that meshes with a chain.
The Bombardier Museum is a large modern museum in Valcourt, Quebec dedicated to the life of Joseph-Armand Bombardier and the snowmobile as well as the industry he helped create.

What is United Technologies: United Technologies Corporation (UTX) is an American multinational conglomerate headquartered at Hartford, Connecticut.

Founded in 1929 as ‘United Aircraft and Transport Corporation’ by the merger of Boeing Airplane Company, Boeing Air Transport, Chance Vought, Hamilton Standard, Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky Aircraft.  As a result of Air Mail Act of 1934, UATC broke up into three independent corporation—United Airlines, Boeing, United Aircraft Corporation (HQ: Hartford, Connecticut). Frederick Rentschler, who had founded Pratt & Whitney in 1925 became CEO of United Aircraft. United Aircraft changed its name to United Technologies on May 1, 1975.

  1. UA became a member of DJIA on March 4, 1939, replacing Nash Motors.  On same day AT&T replaced IBM.
  2. In 1976, it acquired Otis Elevator. Carrier Refrigeration and Mostek (later sold to French ‘Thomson’ in 1985) were acquired in 1979.
  3. It acquired Sunstrand corp in 1999 and merged it with Hamilton Standard to form Hamilton Sunstrand.
  4. Two years later, UTC entered the fire and security business by purchasing Chubb Security, which was followed in 2005 by Kidde. Also in 2005, United Technologies acquired Boeing’s Rocketdyne division, which was merged into the Pratt & Whitney business unit.
  5. The United Technologies Building is known locally as the “Gold Building” due to its gold-tinted glass-mirror exterior.
  6. Clipper Windpower is a wind turbine manufacturing company formed in 2001 by James G.P. Dehlsen, who also formed Zond in 1980. In December 2010 Clipper Windpower was acquired by United Technologies Corporation.

What is Nash: Nash Motors was an automobile manufacturer based in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in the United States

Founder(s): Charles Nash.

Nash Motors History:

Nash Motors was founded in 1916 by General Motors fifth president Charles W. Nash who acquired the Thomas B. Jeffery Company. Jeffery’s best-known automobile was the Rambler whose mass production from a plant in Kenosha, Wisconsin began in 1902. The 1917 Nash Model 671 was the first vehicle produced to bear the name of the new company’s founder.

Nash Motors Trivia:

  1. Nash-Kelvinator Corporation was the result of a merger between Nash Motors and Kelvinator Appliance Company. The union of these two companies was brought about as a result of a condition made by George W. Mason prior to his appointment as CEO of Nash.
  2. In 1925, Nash introduced its entry level marquee Ajax, later sold as ‘Nash Six Light’, which was produced in the newly acquired Mitchell Motor Car Company plant in Racine, Wisconsin.
  3. In 1924,  Nash acquired Indianapolis based LaFayette Motors , which was a manufacturer of expensive luxury cars.
  4. In 1954, Nash Kelvinator acquired Hudson Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan to form the American Motors Corporation. Kelvinator continued as a wholly owned division within the new company.
  5. The Kelvinator brand was eventually sold to White Consolidated Industries.

Surprisingly, Derek will have Soumya Tandon as co-Quiz host for the show! Don’t remember Ms Tandon? She is Kareena Kapoor’s ‘sister’-Roop in Jab We Met and recently hosted Zor Ka Jhatka with SRK!
The Quiz will be for students of Class 7 and Class 8.

The Cadbury Bournvita Quiz Contest started way back in 1972 as a live quiz show that was across cities in India, later moved to being a radio and TV show. The original hosts were Hamid Sayani and his brother Ameen Sayani. But undoubtedly, the most famous host has been Derek O’ Brien.

The show was taken off air a few years ago but wait!! IT IS BACK!! Bournvita Quiz Contest is Back!! This time on Colors at 10:30 am on Sundays!

Bring Back BQC

The Bring Back BQC campaign was started on Facebook by 19 yr old Rahul Sethi and it kick started an online movement with over 150,000 fans today!!

The immense response from the public caught the attention of Cadbury’s and they’ve decided to bring back Bournvita Quiz Contest!!

This is indeed a great victory of Quizzing as I personally believe that BQC and KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati) are the shows that took quizzing to the public.. Stay tuned for more updates as Derek and friends bring back India’s biggest student quiz back!!
