Eid

Eid

- marks the end of the Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting

Eid & its History

Unas reported that when the Prophet Muhammad migrated from Makkah to Madinah, the people of Madinah used to have two festivals. On those two days they had carnivals and festivity. The Prophet Muhammad  asked the Ansaar (the Muslims of Madinah) about it. They replied that before Islam they used to have carnivals on those two joyous days. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) told them: ‘Instead of those two days, Allah has appointed two other days which are better, the days of Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-al-Adha.’

Eid & its significance

EID-AL-FITR is celebrated on the first day of Shaw’waal, at the completion of Ramadan.

Shaw’waal is the 10th month of the Islamic calendar. The Eid-al-Fitr is a very joyous day; it is a true Thanksgiving Day for the believing men and women. On this day Muslims show their real joy for the health, strength and the opportunities of life, which Allah has given to them to fulfill their obligation of fasting and other good deeds during the blessed month of Ramadan.

EID-AL-ADHA is celebrated on the tenth day of Zdilhijjah, the 12th and the last month of the Islamic calendar. It is also very joyous day; it is a feast of self-sacrifice, commitment and obedience to Allah. It commemorates the great act of obedience to Allah by the Prophet Ibrahim in showing his willingness to sacrifice his son Ismael . Allah accepted his sacrifice and replaced Prophet Ismael with a lamb. Although Hajj has no relation with the Eid-al-Adha, but the five days long rituals of Hajj are also done during this month culminating on 9th of Zdilhijjah. Many rituals of Hajj are enactment of the struggle of the family Ibrahim specially his second wife Hajirah and her son Prophet Ismael .

Eid-ul-Fitr is being celebrated on 31st August in 2011 and celebrated on the same day as the Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi

Eid : History & its importance

Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi

-          Also known as Vinayaka Chaturthu is the Hindu festival of Ganesha, who is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees in the duration of this festival. It is the birthday of Ganesha who is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune

Who is Ganesha?

The son of Shiva and Parvathi (Indian Gods) , Ganesha could be considered as the most endearing form of all Hindu deities. Though His worship forms the most important aspect of one’s daily puja, His birthday, Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated grandly with devotion and delight.

Significance of the name ‘Ganesha’

The term Ganesha stems from the root ‘Gana’ which means the hosts or troops of demigods especially referring to the retinue of Lord Shiva and the term ‘Isha’ means ‘ruler’ or ‘lord’. Hence the term Ganesha means “the Lord of the demigods”

Birth of Ganesha

There are a few legends attributed to the birth or rather the manifestation of Ganesha. However the most popular one is that He was formed by Parvati from the material of Her own body. She then commissioned Ganesha to guard while she had her bath. It is said that the steadfast Ganesha did not allow entry to Lord Shiva Himself and the enraged Lord sent His Ganas or demigods to vanquish Ganesha. Since the Ganas had to embrace defeat, as Ganesha was formed out of Mother Sakhti (Parvati who stands for power), Lord Shiva had to tackle Him directly and in the ensuing battle, severed the head of Ganesha which enraged the Mother.

Lord Shiva then ordered His Ganas to proceed westward and come with the head of anything that they happened to see first. It so happened that it was an elephant and its head was fitted to the body of Parvati’s manifested son.

Shiva then declared Ganesha as the leader of His retinue and henceforth be worshipped first in the beginning of all religious activities for fruitful results to ensue.

History of Ganesh Chaturthi

It is not known when and how Ganesh Chaturthi was first celebrated. But according to the historian Shri Rajwade, the earliest Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations can be traced back to the times of the reigns of dynasties as Satavahana, Rashtrakut and Chalukya.

Historical records reveal that Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations were initiated in Maharashtra by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaja, the great Maratha ruler, to promote culture and nationalism. And it had continued ever since. There are also references in history to similar celebrations during Peshwa times. It is believed that Lord Ganapati was the family deity of the Peshwas. After the end of Peshwa rule, Ganesh Chaturthi remained a family affair in Maharashtra from the period of 1818 to 1892.

In 1893, Indian freedom fighter and social reformer Lokmanya Tilak transformed the annual domestic festival into a large, well-organized public event

Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations

For 10 days, from Bhadrapad Shudh Chaturthi to the Ananta Chaturdashi, Ganesha is worshipped. On the 11th day, the statue is taken through the streets in a procession accompanied with dancing, singing, and fanfare to be immersed in a river or the sea symbolizing a ritual see-off of the Lord in his journey towards his abode in Kailash while taking away with him the misfortunes of his devotees, this is the ritual known as Ganesh Visarjan

When is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated?

The festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada, starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). The date usually falls between 20 August and 15 September. The festival lasts for 10 or 12 days, ending on Anant Chaturdashi.

In 2011, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on the same day as Eid and is being celebrated on 1st September

Kappa History

The brand, featuring the Omini logo, was created in 1978 when Marco Boglione, young Sales and Marketing Manager at Maglificio Calzificio Torinese, convinced Maurizio Vitale – company CEO – to create a brand dedicated to sports from growing Robe di Kappa. In 1979 Kappa (Robe di Kappa Sport at the time) sponsored for the first time in Italy a famous football team, Juventus. Trivia:

  1. The logo, known as Omini, is a silhouette of a man (left) and woman (right) sitting back to back in the nude.  It was created in 1969 by mere accident. 2. The logo symbolizes the mutual support between man and woman, and their completion.
  3. The company started as a sock and underwear manufacturer in Turin, Italy.

Danieli, helped by his wife, managed to successfully launch his first product, mountain climbing boots. The mid-’70s marked the company’s entry into the football category. In June 2009, they reached an agreement with Italian shoe-making company Geox’s founder and chairman Mario Moretti Polegato to buy its assets.

Skiing became popular and Danieli once again met the needs of the market by manufacturing ski boots and the first apres-ski boots. Next, they introduced walking shoes and shortly thereafter, tennis shoes. With the seventies came a young generation whose explosive interest in athletics initiated a boom in the sporting goods industry. Based originally on the renowned Italian artisan techniques, their shoes became more and more technologically advanced, thanks to cooperation from champions such as Vilas, Mulligan, and the legendary Bjorn Borg.
  3. Like Diadora, the athletes that wear their shoes are the champions of yesterday, today and tomorrow. Diadora does not boast a fabricated history, but a story of authenticity… a legitimate tale of a family business that started in Italy, grew in Italy, and is still proud to be manufacturing in Italy.

Quizzicus Indica – The India Quiz, the same weekend we also have the Landmark Quiz in Chennai

Some questions from Kamal Rathi’s blog to help you prepare for Quizzicus Indica:

1. It is alternatively called ‘Patience’. There is an old tradition in the German or Scandinavian countries to use “patience” as a guide to what the near future has to offer, a kind of “luck” meter. This belief assumes that a person’s “luck” will vary from time to time and important matters should not be initiated or conducted when the cards are not favourable. If there are no winnings in the game for a number of tries it spells caution in what you do. If a win at the first try times are good and “luck” smiles at you, thus the immediate future can be used for important decisions. Timing the game is a further indicator of the strength of the outcome. What am I talking about?
Ans.: Solitaire (Card Game)
