Tata Crucible UK Edition 2011

The UK edition of the quiz is a single location event open to participants, in teams of two each from the same college/university and they register online for the same. The desirous teams then assemble at a common venue and all the teams will be subjected to a written elimination round of 20-25 questions at the start. Out of these, 8 top  teams will be then invited on the stage (normally 6 top scoring teams and 2 teams from a quick wild card round) for 5 to 6 rounds of live quiz on stage from which the winners will be crowned.

The rounds will consist of questions from the world of international business and economy, including corporates, personalities, brands, markets, etc. The emphasis in the questions is not on the obvious, but lateral thinking and associations.

Win up to £4000 CASH PRIZE and an ALL EXPENSE PAID trip to India for the International Finals.

BQC: Bournvita Quiz Contest

Update as on 1st August 2011: So, its official!! Bournvita Quiz Contest will be back on Colors from 14th August 10:30 -11 am.. Surprisingly, Derek will have Soumya Tandon as co-Quiz host for the show! Don’t remember Ms Tandon? She is Kareena Kapoor’s ‘sister’-Roop in Jab We Met and recently hosted Zor Ka Jhatka with SRK!
The Quiz will be for students of Class 7 and Class 8.

I have multiple times shared with friends and clients how I started my Quizzing career and how closely associated Bournvita Quiz Contest is to my Quizzing Life today and I am sure BQC has been an integral part of the lives of most readers of this post..

History of BQC

The Cadbury Bournvita Quiz Contest started way back in 1972 as a live quiz show that was across cities in India, later moved to being a radio and TV show. The original hosts were Hamid Sayani and his brother Ameen Sayani. But undoubtedly, the most famous host has been Derek O’ Brien.

The show was taken off air a few years ago but wait!! IT IS BACK!! Bournvita Quiz Contest is Back!! This time on Colors at 10:30 am on Sundays!

Bring Back BQC

The Bring Back BQC campaign was started on Facebook by 19 yr old Rahul Sethi and it kick started an online movement with over 150,000 fans today!!

The immense response from the public caught the attention of Cadbury’s and they’ve decided to bring back Bournvita Quiz Contest!!

This is indeed a great victory of Quizzing as I personally believe that BQC and KBC (Kaun Banega Crorepati) are the shows that took quizzing to the public.. Stay tuned for more updates as Derek and friends bring back India’s biggest student quiz back!!

Review by the BioQuiz 2011 Quizmaster : Rohit Nair

As we, at QuizWorks, started working with the Govt of Karnataka for the 2nd edition of the BioQuiz – the brief was simple : The previous edition had limited number of teams participating, this edition must touch the maximum number of students possible in Karnataka and ignite the latent sparks of BioScience in the minds of various UG students in Karnataka.

After immense marketing and on ground activities for over 10 days, the BioQuiz regional levels kicked off on 26th April 2011 with the Bangalore Edition in PESIT.

I must say , we were taken aback by the enthusiasm of the participants (168 teams participated in Bangalore) and even more by the speed and accuracy of answers delivered by the students of B.E (Biotech) , B.Pharma and B.Sc …

By the end of two weeks and the 6 regional rounds at Bangalore, Mysore, Bagalkote, Belgaum, Shimoga and Mangalore – we had more than 450 registered teams and had touched over 2000 students through our  shows in the six districts.

As we landed for our State Finals on May 6 at BIEC, Bangalore – we believed we had the 12 smartest brains in the Science region and did they prove us right!!

A 1000 strong audience and a great setting , 5 rounds of quizzing and 6 great teams battled it out!!

After 80 minutes of quizzing and some great answers, we had College of Agriculture Dharwad tied for first spot with St Aloysius Mangalore.  But the history of Smallpox saved the day for St. Aloysius as they won the tie breaker on the buzzer and won a cash prize of Rs 75000/- and won the coveted BioQuiz Championship !

Some learnings, my team and I had – never underestimate the prowess of the hinterland and this was reiterated by the fact that the teams from Mangalore & Dharwad beat the Bangalore and Mysore champions.. The biggest positive from the event is the fact that however niche your audience is, there is always a great enthusiasm for intellectual contests and quizzes. The Indian audience is still not completely a Roadies Generation!!

Personally I am disappointed by the price. Rs 35000 for a Locked phone is way too high. This is possibly the most expensive Android based Tech gadget. Whats more disappointing is the fact that it is not available without contract.

Running on Android 1.6 (Upgrade support to Froyo soon), it supports flash , has a 5 MP camera and has a 5 inch long screen.

Although feature packed, the price tag might hinder its entry to mass-market considering the large number of  ’cheaper’ Android phones available today in India.
