1. The “Arcuate”, the double arch stitching on the back pocket, is a Levi’s trademark, which the company has repeatedly defended in court.
2. In 1886 the “Two Horse Brand” leather tag, showing a team of horses trying to pull apart a pair of pants, began to be sewn into the back of the company’s “waist-high overalls,” the term Levi Strauss preferred to “jeans.”
3. In 1890 the firm assigned its first lot numbers to its products, and the famous number “501″ was assigned to the riveted pants.
4. The red tab attached to the left rear pocket was created in 1936 as a means of identifying Levi’s jeans at a distance.

Levi’s History: 

It was founded in 1853 when Levi Strauss came from Buttenheim, Franconia, (Kingdom of Bavaria) to San Francisco, California to open a west coast branch of his brothers’ New York dry goods business. In 1873 Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis received a U.S. Patent to make the first riveted men’s work pants out of denim: the first blue jeans. The company briefly experimented (in the 1970s) with a public stock listing, but remains owned and controlled by descendants and relatives of Levi Strauss’s four nephews.

Levi’s History Trivia:

Levi's history - The Red Tab

1. In World War II, blue jeans were declared an essential commodity and were sold only to people engaged in defense work.
2. At the age of 18, Strauss, his mother and two sisters sailed for the United States to join his brothers Jonas and Louis, who had begun a wholesale dry goods business in New York City called J. Strauss Brother & Co.
3. Jacob Davis, a Jewish emigrant from Latvia, was a tailor who frequently purchased bolts of cloth made from hemp from Levi Strauss & Co.’s wholesale house. After one of Davis’ customers kept purchasing cloth to reinforce torn pants, he had an idea to use copper rivets to reinforce the points of strain, such as on the pocket corners and at the base of the button fly. Davis did not have the required money to purchase a patent, so he wrote to Strauss suggesting that they go into business together. After Levi accepted Jacob’s offer, on May 20, 1873, the two men received U.S. Patent 139,121 from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
4. The patented rivet was later incorporated into the company’s jean design and advertisements. Contrary to an advertising campaign suggesting that Levi Strauss sold his first jeans to gold miners during the California Gold Rush (which peaked in 1849), the manufacturing of denim overalls only began in the 1870s.
5. The company then created their first pair of Levis 501 Jeans in the 1890′s, a style that went on to become the world’s best selling item of clothing.
6. The “Arcuate”, the double arch stitching on the back pocket, is a Levi’s trademark, which the company has repeatedly defended in court. During World War II it was deemed by the US Government to be decorative only, so the Arcuate was hand-painted onto the pockets.
7. Contributing to the change in the lifestyle of the people of Braddock, Pennsylvania, a town whose growth reversed with the decline of the steel industry, the Levi’s brand is committed to funding the refurbishment of Braddock’s community center, a focal point of the town and their youth-based programming. Additionally, Levi’s is supporting Braddock’s urban farm which supplies produce to local area residents at reduced costs.
8. Signature by Levi Strauss & Co.was a range of high-quality, affordable fashionable jeans and casualwear for the whole family.
9. May 20, 1873 is now considered the official birthday of ”blue jeans.”

MINDSWEEP 2012

It is with pleasure that we announce the inaugural edition of KQA’s International Solo Championship, titled MindSweep.

We have confirmations from the United Kingdom and the United States, and a few more countries will probably participate.

Mindsweep will be held during the weekend comprising Saturday, 7 January and Sunday 8 January 2012.

The quiz will require participants to answer 200 questions–in two sessions of 60 minutes each with a 30 minute break between sessions for corrections. Please register in advance using the form on this page.

The quiz is split into 10 sections of 20 questions each and is set by Dibyendu Das, Kiran Vijayakumar and Arul Mani.

History: The business was founded by Morris Cooper and his best friend, Louis Maister, after they’d left their hometown in Lithuania and traveled first to South Africa and then to London. Their idea was make work wear in the East End and export it to South Africa, where they knew there would be a big demand. By the time the First World War came along in 1914, Morris and Louis were employing 600 people.

The Fortune 500 list was conceptualized by Edgar P. Smith, an editor for Fortune. The first Fortune 500 list was released in 1955. The Fortune 500 list consists of the top grossing companies by revenue and is an indicative of the rise or fall of the American economy.
A team of reporters, accountants and analysts go through the companies’ annual financial statements, which all publicly traded companies must file each year with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Once the information is gathered and organized, Fortune compiles the list and publishes it in April.

For American companies, nothing exudes prestige like a listing in Fortune magazine’s annual Fortune 500.

TCS IT Wiz 2011: SBOA makes Chennai proud | Quiz Review

CHENNAI: They came, they contested and they conquered – not just the title but also hearts.

Gokul T and R Aditya from SBOA school, Chennai, defeated eleven other equally talented teams from the rest of the country to emerge winners of the TCS IT Wiz quiz contest – 2011 at the Taj Coromandel on Saturday.

It wasn’t a cake walk for the two school kids, who were good enough to be called tech wizards, as they held on to their nerves to win a nail-biting finish. The quiz contest, the finals of which was held on Saturday, had been held over a period of six months. Although Delhi managed to surge ahead with a few quick points, Chennai and Hyderabad weren’t far behind it.

The team that surprised the audience was the one from Sri Chaitanya Junior College, Hyderabad, which had two enthusiastic quizzers who overtook the remaining teams during the tie-breaker round to make their way into the second level.� While St Paul’s English School, Bangalore looked promising at the start of the second level, Lokhandwala Foundation School, Mumbai and Lucknow Public School, Lucknow offered tough competition. Amidst all the high-tech drama, SBOA Chennai maintained a decent score in every round. The final round of the contest – that had teams from Chennai, Bangalore, Lucknow and Mumbai contesting – was a nerve-wracking one.

SBOA, Chennai – the home team stood victorious with 65 points bringing cheer to the audience, while Bangalore occupied the runner’s up position with 40 points.

“It feels great to know that the future of our country is bright and safe,” said guest of honour, N Chandrasekaran,� CEO & MD, Tata Consultancy Services.

The winners were presented with a Macbook pro each, while the runner’s up took home iphone 4.

Every participating team won Blue-ray DVD players and other goodies.

Amazon.com History:

Jeff Bezos, a computer science graduate from Princeton University, came up with the business plan of Amazon.com while making a cross-country drive from New York to Seattle in 1994.  He wanted the name of the enterprise to start with an ‘A’ so that it’d appear early in alphabetical order. He looked in the dictionary and settled on ‘Amazon’ as he found it to be an “exotic and different place” and being the longest river, hoped that the company would grow to replicate the same in the world of online shopping.  The site went online in 1995.

Amazon Logo: The logo of Amazon.com has an arrow going from ‘a’ to ‘z’, to represent the fact that their catalogue includes product starting from all letters of the alphabet. The arrow also forms a smile to indicate customer satisfaction.

-          One of the major complaints of the stockholders of the company was that, it was very slow in showing profits.

-          Although it’s online services were started in 1995, amazon.com’s first profitable year in history was 2002.

-          Barnes and Noble is amazon.com’s biggest rival in the industry.

-          A glitch in Amazon.com’s programming allowed writers to criticize their own works favorably on the site.

-          Amazon acquired IMDb, the online database of Movies, Television shows, Videogames, Actors, Characters  and other personnel associated to the world of cinema and television for in 1998 and Alexa Internet, the browsing behavior study and internet ranking website in 1999.

-          The first book sold on Amazon.com was  Douglas Hofstadter’s Fluid Concepts and Creative Analogies: Computer Models of the Fundamental Mechanisms of Thought in 1996.

–          The Time Magazine named Jeff Bezos as the ‘Man of the Year’ in 1999 for his company’s success in popularizing online shopping.

-          The Amazon Kindle was launched in 2007 and has about 48% market share of all e-book readers.

-          Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal were both employees of Amazon before they started flipkart.com.

Heritage India Quiz | Quiz Review

DAV CSPur wins Heritage India Quiz

BHUBANESWAR:

DAV Public School, Chandrashekharpur, has won the CBSE Heritage India Quiz competition conducted by CBSE New Delhi, for the second time. Around 10,000 schools affiliated to the board had participated in the quiz. The competition was conducted at four different levels. Aswin Kumar Behera of Class IX, Swastik Pradhan of Class X and Gourav Jena of Class IX reached the final round and won by 95 points.

Quiz master Pranab Mukherjee conducted it at the India Islamic Centre. The winning team along with the guide teacher were awarded the champion’s trophy citation and cash prize of Rs. 21,000 by the Minister of State for External Affairs and HRD E Ahamed and CBSE chairman Vineet Joshi.

The team was felicitated by the school at a separate function by SMC chairman Madan Mohan Panda and Principal KC Satpathy.

In a display of intelligence and quick thinking, Delhi Public School, Kolkata, team of Arunavha Chanda and Mitul Dey Chowdhury emerged triumphant at the national finals of the “Limca Book of Records Quiz-11” in the Capital on Tuesday.

The “Limca Book of Records Quiz” competitions were organised for students from Class VIII to XII in over 3,800 schools across 80 cities over a six-month period.

Hosted by quiz master and Rajya Sabha member Derek O’ Brien, the finals saw Delhi Public School, Kolkata, prevailing over teams from Sherwood College, Nainital, and New Era Public School, Delhi.

Felicitating the winners, former Chief Justice J. S. Verma described the event as an “unprecedented learning platform”. “Initiatives such as these are an ideal platform for students since they enhance their awareness around a variety of subjects and stimulate their creative thinking.”

On the occasion, Limca Book of Records holder Aditi Singhal enthralled the students with a quick demonstration of her ability to memorise things.

According to Mr. Brien, the initiative is a great platform to impart knowledge, promote learning and help young minds to know and grow.

The 22nd edition of the Limca Book of Records launched earlier this year was dedicated to the outstanding performances of 15 Indian athletes during the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in 2010.
