Gurgaon-based Olive Telecom has launched India’s first 3G tablet, OlivePad VT-100. This tablet not only supports 3G network but also doubles up as a smartphone that allows users to make voice and video calls. OlivePad is expected to be available in retail stores across the country by the first week of August.

The tablet runs on Google’s Android Operating System and supports 3.5G HSUPA, Wi-fi, Bluetooth and high speed wireless broadband (courtesy Tata Indicom). It has a 7″ touchscreen with dual cameras – a 3 megapixel rear camera and a VGA front camera. The primary use of the OlivePad will be that as a touch notebook for browsing, multimedia, instant messaging and social networking. It can also be used as an e-book reader, TV and gaming console. GPS, flash support and mini USB port are some of its other exciting features.

Although priced less than Rs 25,000 , the Olivepad is slightly heavy , not multi-touch and runs an older version of Android.

Olive has tied up with Croma to sell its tablet across their store. Will iPad’s delayed launch in India be Olivepad’s gain? We’ll need to wait and see.
