Siddharth Banerjee and Ahmed Firdaus won the West Zone round of the Times MAK Moto Quiz 2011, held at the Birla Matushri Auditorium on Saturday.

The participants included youngsters from various companies and colleges of Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad. All of them had to go through the preliminary rounds, where each participant had to answer 20 questions, out of which six teams qualified for the zonal finals.

The format of the quiz was based on the concept of racing through the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. Each round involved different stages which a driver undergoes during a race.

The quiz was dominated by questions on F1 but there were several on MotoGP, Indian racing, WRC and NASCAR as well. Quizmaster Avinash Mudaliar ensured that the audience and the team were on their toes. Source: Times of India

Gnosiomania – MNNIT ALLAHABAD- Review from an Organizer
QM: Avinash Mudaliar

2 days.
5 quizzes.
17 hours of quizzing.
283 questions.

IT Quiz

The quizzing marathon started on the 30th of January 2010 with an IT quiz. In spite of the quiz being focused on IT, it saw the participation of students from all streams of engineering, sciences and arts. The main auditorium was filled with students all set for the series of quizzes that lay ahead of them.
The prelims was done live by the quizmaster Avinash Mudaliar, had a well researched mix of 30 questions related to Information Technology, Computer Science and Electronics. The finals was electric with a very well appreciated stage two on gaming that left the audience and teams with a feeling of ‘wow’.
1st Prize: Tanmay Agarwal, Sidharth Malik, Prabhakar Kumar (BIT, Mesra)
2nd Prize: Soumya Pandey, Samdrisht Singh, Kumar Shaurya Shankar (DCE)
3rd Prize: Ashwyn Chandrashekhar, Sneha Ranjan, Lakshmi (BIT, Mesra)

Sports Quiz
The second event of the day to follow the IT quiz was a Sports Quiz. The quizmaster had announced in the beginning of the quiz that it will be a ‘Sports’ quiz covering all possible Sports and Games, not a quiz on the popular sports like Cricket or Tennis.
And the quiz was just that, a very good mix of questions covering all possible games and sports. There were questions on games like Polo, Gymnastics, Chess, extreme sports, ballroom dancing and even arm wrestling, which took everyone by surprise. Even people who weren’t too much inclined towards sports quizzing thoroughly enjoyed the quiz!
1st Prize: Soumya Pandey, Samdrisht Singh, Kumar Shaurya Shankar (DCE)
2nd Prize: Vinayak B, Zuhaib Khwaja, Hemant Agarwal (MNNIT, Allahabad)
3rd Prize: Harsh Trivedi, Nikhil Lohia, Suyash Sengar (HBTI, Kanpur)

Entertainment Quiz

It was the most awaited quiz of the day, the entertainment quiz. The entire auditorium was full. The quiz started post dinner and had the largest turnout of audience as compared to any other event in the fest. Everyone who was present took part in the prelims, whether or not they were quizzers. And the quiz turned out to be a delight, with questions that can be appreciated by the masses.
The quizmaster did a wonderful job ensuring that the huge crowd that had gathered for the quiz had lots of fun and participated in the quiz. His PJs and wisecracks kept the crowd going even at late hours in the night.
The highlight of the quiz was the stage two, which was on theaters in Allahabad. With a large number of the audience being from the city, the audience was ecstatic to see that a quiz master had actually researched on local content and made an entire stage two out of it.
1st Prize: Prabhakar Kumar, Sneha Ranjan and Ashwyn Chandra (BIT, Mesra)
2nd Prize: Tarang Singhal, Sunny Pandey, Shashwat Kant (HBTI Kanpur)
3rd Prize: Soumya Pandey, Samdrisht Singh, Kumar Shaurya Shankar (DCE)

General Quiz
After a long day of quizzing on 30th, people were back in the morning at the auditorium for the general quiz. The quiz started with a question on the family chart of The Nehru Family, an apt question to start with in MNNIT. All the participants crowded around the screen, sat down trying to crack the puzzle. This was one of those memorable sights in quizzing that one doesn’t get to see too often. The organizers were busy taking photographs of the participants, trying to capture the moment.
1st Prize: Soumya Pandey, Samdrisht Singh, Kumar Shaurya Shankar (DCE)
2nd Prize: Aaditya Tiwari, Shaswat Omar, Bhalendu Chauhan (HBTI, Kanpur)
3rd Prize: Abinash Pant, Hemant Agarwal, Nitish Kumar Yadav (MNNIT, Allahabad)

Auto Quiz
The last quiz and probably one of the most awaited quiz. After a memorable auto quiz in the last Gnosiomania conducted by Mr. Avinash Mudaliar, the interest in auto quizzes have increased multifold in the campus. Though teams weren’t sure if auto was their cup of tea, they still gathered at the auditorium to get a taste of an auto quiz. The prelims was very workout-able, with questions on the very meaning of auto, connects on Imphala, word origins of Diesel and Petrol. The final was a high speed action with lots of buzzer based rounds, special rounds where teams challenge each other on various topics etc. This high energy quiz was an apt ending to the quizzing marathon that started with an IT quiz 17 hours before.
1st Prize: Prabhakar Kumar, Lakshmi and Siddharth Malik (BIT, Mesra)
2nd Prize: K Shaurya Shankar, Soumya Pande, Samdristh Singh (DCE)
3rd Prize: Kaushik Kishore (APJCE), Aparna (NIT, Jamshedpur), Monika (NIT, Jamshedpur)

TAPMI’s flagship event QOTB (Quiz on the Beach) was an engaging and entertaining evening, hosted by quizmaster Avinash Mudaliar.
In the first of its kind, Tapmi and the QM decided to have a crossword to keep the audience engaged before starting the prelims.
The prelim was extremely good and IMO, some questions deserved final status.

The finals consisted of 5 rounds with 2 dry, 2 theme and one personality based buzzer round.

Tejaswi Udupa(Yahoo) and Ramkey (KPMG) started the quiz in style and maintained their lead till the last question. The team from Cognizant (Shubham and Venkatesh) came a close second.

The quiz, on a whole, was fantastic- wrt content, presentation and punctuality (considering participants had to catch early buses)

Wish to see many more lively Quizzes on the Beach. You can find below the prelims and questions from the crossword.

Some Corrections: Thanks to Piyush Arora from SPJIMR. Pls find the corrected information here. Errors are regretted
There was no IIT Bombay SJSOM. ISB were the final winners. NMIMS and NITIE didnt not turn up for the finals. Repesenting the western region were two teams from SPJIMR and a team from ITM mumbai which also qualified for final.
Quizzing.in Delhi Correspondent
Name of Quiz: NTPC Electron National Finals
Date: 23rd December 2009
Venue: PMI, Noida
Quiz master: Derek O’Brien
A total of 15 teams selected from the 5 regional rounds conducted in the cities of Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Kolkata and Hyderabad, participated in the National Round. There were 3 semifinal rounds conducted and from these 15 teams, 6 teams were selected for the final round. The teams that made it to the finals were SJMSOM IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kolkata, NSIT Delhi and NMIMS Mumbai.
The general opinion was that the questions in the regional rounds were very workout-able as compared to the semifinals and finals, where the questions were strait-jacketed, so either you knew it or you didn’t. Some of the questions were Tendulkar theory/index, Mount Everest replacing the King’s photo in the Nepalese currency etc figured in the quiz. Some rounds also had differentiated scoring patterns, like +5 for a direct and +10 for a pass. The combination of a differentiated skewed scoring pattern and questions which were ‘know-it’ or ‘know-it-nots’, lead to a scenario where luck was quite a deciding factor.
Otherwise, it was like any other Derek’s quiz, high on stage performance and low on content. In fact, general team sentiments echoed the fact that the prelims questions of the regional rounds were of better standard than the questions in the finals. All in all, like the USP of all Derek quizzes, this too turned out to be an evening of fellowship, camaraderie, good food and good humour with questions thrown in. At the end of the day, the team from ISB,Hyderabad emerged as the winners
With regards to ramping up the regionals, NTPC has done a great job, moving up to the next level with regard to content, presentation, research and quizmastering. This years regional rounds were way above what we all witnessed in the previous years and it also left a few of us wondering as to why the same team did not do the finals. Just a word of advice, a couple of the young breed quiz masters could do better by adding humour into their arsenal and hence enhancing presentation and doing justice to the strong content they have created. At the final round, NTPC again played the perfect host, providing great food and hospitality, and not to forget the prizes :-) .
